Remembrance Day 2023

 

Remembrance Day Events

We will be observing a two minute silence in school on Thursday to mark Remembrance Day.

Poppies are available from reception.

All pupils are invited to wear their forces uniform- if a member of the land, air or sea cadets on Thursday 09 November as a mark of respect.

On Sunday Mrs Gibson, with representatives from the Academy will be attending the Thorne and Moorends parade and service.  We will be assembling from 10.30am in Thorne Memorial Park, please join us.

 

Thorne and Moorends will hold its annual Remembrance Sunday parade and service on Sunday 12th November

A service of remembrance will be conducted at the Cenotaph in Thorne Memorial Park by the Reverend Tim Mitchell, vicar of St Nicholas Church, followed by a parade to the church led by RBL parade marshal, Mr John Phillips.

The event is organised by Thorne Moorends Town Council in partnership with the Thorne & District branch of the Royal British Legion (RBL).

Members of the public are invited to assemble in Thorne Memorial Park from 10.30am on Sunday 12 November, with the service of remembrance at the Cenotaph scheduled to start at around 10.45am. A two-minute silence will be held at 11am, followed by wreath laying.

Everyone is then invited to take part in the parade to St Nicholas’ for a remembrance service at the church.

The Thorne & District branch of the RBL says: “Remembrance Sunday on 12 November is a special opportunity for the people of Thorne and Moorends to come together at the Cenotaph in Thorne to remember those men and women who served in our armed forces and those who made the ultimate sacrifice”.

*On Saturday 11 November the Thorne & District RBL branch will hold a brief Armistice Day service to commemorate the ending of the first world war in 1918, gathering at the Cenotaph in Thorne Memorial Park at around 10.45am.

 Winter Update

It has been a busy time here at school and we have lots of good news to share.

 

At the beginning of November, we shared together, a time to reflect as we prepared for our day of Remembrance. Children worked hard to create a display and pieces of poetry about the event and why we remember it. Students sold and wore poppies and money was raised for the British Legion.

 

 

 

During November, Year 7’s worked on the First Give Project in RE lessons.

Through the RE Department, Year 7 completed the 'First Give' project hoping to raise social awareness about a variety of local charities. To this end, Year 7 (and their RE teachers) worked really hard to raise money for their charities, by selling baked goods, pot plants, running competitions etc. Their willingness to help others through their own actions, has been a pleasure to see. Soon, some of our Year 7s will be taking part in a competition to showcase their efforts -more on this next month!

Also in November, some staff took part in MOVEMBER. ‘Movember’ fundraisers are a global community making a difference in mental health and suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer. One member of staff grew a moustache to raise money to for the charity which focus’ on health issues relating specifically to men. Cakes were made and sold and all money was given directly to the charity. Thank you!

The ‘Shoebox Appeal’ also took place and over 50 boxes were filled and given to The Samaritans to be distributed to those in need in other countries. An amazing effort by students and staff – well done!

 

We were also pleased to welcome members of the ‘Compassion’ team, who led an assembly with every year group.This is a charity which encourages others to sponsor those less fortunate in places around the globe who are in need of support and care. The team, introduced us to the five children we are sponsoring in Haiiti and inspired us to think creatively about fund-raising. The school will be undertaking various, student-led events and activities throughout the year to raise money for the newest members of our ‘Trinity Family’. The students really enjoyed hearing about what they could do to help.

December as always, has been our busiest month of the year. The sixth form led our annual Foodbank collection – many items were collected and distributed into our local community. Well done everyone and thanks to the students who oversaw this valuable work.

 

A toy collection, run by Thorne Rural Lions Club, took place also with 56 toys being bought by students and staff to be gifted to children. This is such a wonderful opportunity to bless others, at time of year when some have so much and others have little. Thank you to all for your kindness. 

 

 

  

December, saw our annual ‘Save the Children Christmas Jumper Day, a fun and special event which the children and staff always enjoy. Children wore Christmas jumpers and cakes were sold to raise money for the charity. Members of the catering team, staff and students all kindly contributed –

 A grand total of £ 731 was raised for Save the Children - Thank you to one and all!

 

 

 

In the next few months, we will be taking part in Red Nose Day- as well as continuing our work with Compassion and don’t forget Year 7 have a special event coming up with First Give – an update of that next time!
